ABSTRACT: The 2003/2004 austral summer was very rainy in the central portions of Brazil (Southeast and Central-West Regions, and southern NEB) ranking it among the five rainiest summer from the last 45 years. Five episodes of South Atlantic Convergence Zone (SACZ) occurred during this summer highly influenced by the intraseasonal waves that prevailed over the planet. This work has used daily normalized anomalies of geopotential heigh at 200 hPa (NCEP/NCAR Reanalysis) and Outgoing Longwave Radiation (ROL), plus interpolated rain over the whole South America to diagnoses the relationships among the Madden-Julian Oscillation (MJO), the Pacific South America (PSA) pattern of teleconnection and the SACZ. The results have shown that during December the MJO has been associated to the PSA, maintaning favorable large scale conditions to the occurrence of convective clusters that stroke the southern Brazil. In January, the MJO has been associated to a zonal wave train located almost entirely in the subtropical belt. This wavetrain has maintained appropriated conditions to the development of three SACZ episodes. In february, as soon as the MJO convective phase has returned to the Indonesian region after had traveled the globe around the equator, the PSA returns to keep a large scale pattern that actively participate in two others SACZ episodes.
